G-Dragon’s ÜBERMENSCH ALBUM REVIEW
G-Dragon has long been celebrated as the King of K-Pop, a title earned through his innovative music, unique fashion sense, and significant influence in shaping the genre’s landscape. With a career that spans over a decade, his ability to push boundaries and redefine artistic expression has garnered him a massive fanbase. His latest album, "Ubermensch," sparked considerable anticipation among listeners and critics alike, leaving many curious about whether it would live up to the high expectations set by his previous works. As I dove into the album, I aimed to determine if it could match the monumental legacy that G-Dragon has built throughout his illustrious career.
In this album review, I will be assessing three main areas: Vocal Performance, Album Production, and Artist Identity.
Vocal Performance focuses on the technical and emotional delivery of vocals by the artist. It examines aspects such as range, tone, clarity, and the ability to convey feelings through singing.
Album Production evaluates the overall sound quality and the craftsmanship behind the recording process. This includes the arrangement of instruments, mixing, and the use of technology to enhance the listening experience.
Artist Identity explores how the artist’s personal essence and distinct style are reflected throughout the album. It considers the lyrical themes, visual presentation, and how these elements contribute to the artist's unique brand in the music industry.

G-Dragon’s long-awaited return with ÜBERMENSCH carried the weight of immense expectation. As the often proclaimed “King of K-pop,” his artistic identity has always thrived on innovation, unpredictability, and a bold sense of musical and visual storytelling. The album’s title alone—referencing Nietzsche’s concept of the “Overman,” a figure of ultimate self-mastery and evolution—suggested that this would be a defining moment, a reinvention of his artistry on an elevated plane. However, despite the grandeur of its aesthetic presentation, ÜBERMENSCH ultimately falls short of its promise. One of the album’s most glaring weaknesses is its lack of growth. Lyrically, G-Dragon has long been known for his sharp wordplay and introspective storytelling, yet ÜBERMENSCH offers little evidence of artistic evolution. The themes feel surface-level, and the writing lacks the depth expected from someone with his experience and influence. Similarly, his vocal technique remains largely unchanged—his signature vocal fry, while effective in bursts, becomes overwhelmingly fatiguing in a full-length project. Within #BIGBANG, this vocal texture finds balance alongside the smoother tones of his group members. But in #ÜBERMENSCH, where his voice dominates, the strain becomes distracting rather than compelling. Production-wise, the album does little to push boundaries.
While G-Dragon has never relied on powerhouse vocals, his past projects have compensated with dynamic compositions and genre-bending production choices. Here, however, much of the album feels sonically safe. Tracks like “TAKE ME”, while undeniably catchy, lean heavily on simplistic melodies and structurally repetitive hooks. The song’s youthful energy is entertaining, but for an artist of his stature, the execution comes across as underdeveloped rather than intentional minimalism. For an artist who has consistently set trends and defied industry norms, ÜBERMENSCH is a surprisingly conventional outing. It’s not without its moments of enjoyment, but given G-Dragon’s track record of setting new standards, this album feels more like a step sideways than forward. The grandeur of its concept and branding deserved a more groundbreaking execution. That said, if you set aside the expectation the album being a groundbreaking artistic statement, the album is undeniably fun. G-Dragon’s charisma and infectious energy shine through, making it an enjoyable listen despite its shortcomings. I think he’s successfully maintained his identity within the music . And even the flawed vocal performance was laced with belief. The playful melodies, high-energy beats, and rebellious spirit still capture what makes him such a captivating performer. It may not be the masterpiece many hoped for, but if approached with a lighter mindset, it delivers plenty of moments to vibe to.
