My TOP 24 K Pop ALBUMS of 2024 Pt1 (24-13)

In today's vlog post, I'll be sharing my picks for the top 24 K-pop albums of 2024. Curating this list has proven challenging, as many albums this year have prioritized standout singles while often lacking substantial depth in their overall content. My assessments are informed by my extensive experience in the music industry as a singer, songwriter, producer, and studio vocalist.

To create a fair and focused evaluation, I narrowed my critique down to three key areas:

  1. Vocal Performance: This area focuses on the technical and emotional delivery of the artists’ vocals. Strong vocal performance encompasses not just pitch accuracy but also the ability to convey feelings and connect with the listener. This includes nuances such as breath control, dynamics, and vocal texture.

  2. Album Production: Here, I assess the entire production quality of the album, including the arrangement of songs, their order, and the mixing and mastering processes. A well-produced album should provide a cohesive listening experience where each track complements the others, creating a narrative or atmosphere that resonates throughout the project.

  3. Artist Identity: This criterion examines how well the album reflects the artist's unique style and musical persona. It involves analyzing the originality of the sound, themes tackled in the lyrics, and the overall alignment of the work with the artist's established image and previous offerings.

Join me as I delve into the best K-pop albums of the year through these focused lenses.

24. #Loossemble - TTYL

Vocal Performance: 5.5 /10

Album Production: 6.8/10

Artist/Group Identity: 5.5/ 10

OVERALL RATING : 5.9/10

Favorite Song: Secret Diary Less Favorite: Hocus Pocus

Overall Critique:

Loossemble’s TTYL album delivers a bright and cohesive sonic journey that showcases the group’s distinct charm and artistic identity. The overarching theme ties the tracks together seamlessly, creating a unified listening experience. The execution of the songs demonstrates solid artistic direction.

However, there are moments throughout the album where vocal performances feel slightly jarring, revealing areas that could benefit from refinement. While these instances don’t overshadow the overall quality of the project, they do stand out against the otherwise well-executed delivery.

23. #Enhypen - Romance Untold: Daydream

Vocal Performance: 6/10

Album Production: 6.5/10

Artist/Group Identity: 7/10

OVERALL RATING: 6.5/10

Favorite Song: MoonStruck/No Doubt Less Favorite: Highway 1009

Overall Crique:

Enhypen’s Romance Untold: Daydream is a semi well-polished addition to the group’s discography, showcasing their unique approach to mainstream pop while maintaining the signature branding that has solidified their presence in the global music scene. As a concept-driven group, Enhypen excels at weaving a cohesive narrative into their music. With themes of longing, growth, and fleeting emotions, the group offers listeners an immersive sonic experience that aligns with their youthful, dreamlike image. However, while the group’s strengths lie in their synergy, there are moments where vocal execution feels less dynamic. Some tracks could have benefited from a stronger delivery or more experimental vocal arrangements, which would add depth to the emotional narrative. One of Enhypen’s greatest assets is their ability to produce music that feels tailor-made for their brand. Stand out songs on the album both “ Moon Struck” and “No Doubt” are tracks that succeed in encapsulating the dreamy, aspirational image Enhypen has built since their debut.

22. #TXT - Sanctuary

Vocal Performance: 6.5/10

Album Production: 7.7/10

Artist/Group Identity: 5.5/10

OVERALL RATING: 6.5/10

Favorite Song: Danger Less Favorite: Higher than Heaven

Overall Critique:

#TXT’s Sanctuary offers a collection of well-produced tracks that showcase their signature blend of youthful energy and emotional storytelling. While it’s a listenable album it has little to no standout moments, it leans heavily into a pop-forward approach. Unfortunately, the performances feel technically stagnant, with songs like “Resist” lacking the vocal depth needed to fully convey the song’s message. The vocal production often feels sparse, with little to no underlayered harmonies or dueling melodies to add richness. One notable exception is “Forty One Winks,” which highlights a groovier production style from the talented #DemJointz. However, this track also exposes the group’s struggles to deliver relaxed and smooth vocals that better suit the song’s vibe. While Sanctuary is an enjoyable listen, it ultimately leaves room for TXT to explore greater vocal and technical growth in their future projects.

21. #ROSÉ - Rosie

Vocal Performance: 8/10

Album Production: 8.2/10

Artist/Group Identity: 4/10

Overall Rating: 6.7/10

Favorite Song: Drinks or Coffee Less Favorite: Number One Girl

OVERALL Critque:

ROSÉ’s Rosie offers a polished, meticulously crafted collection of tracks that showcase her vocal prowess and attention to detail. From the start, it’s clear that the production is top-notch, with each song delivering a seamless blend of melodies and instrumentation. Her voice remains the centerpiece, as it should, effortlessly gliding over lush arrangements. However, despite the album’s technical excellence, it leaves listeners yearning for more depth and individuality—a stronger sense of who ROSÉ is as an artist. The central issue with Rosie lies in its identity, or lack thereof. While the tracks are undeniably well-executed, they feel more like variations of concepts we’ve encountered before, rather than fresh, defining statements. The album seems to lean heavily on pre-existing templates—softly atmospheric ballads and dreamy, introspective pop. These are concepts listeners might have anticipated for ROSÉ, but the execution feels like a diluted version of the originality she’s capable of. In many ways, Rosie feels like it’s playing it safe, and in doing so, it struggles to carve out a distinct space for ROSÉ in the wider musical landscape. It’s not that the album is without merit—it’s a testament to her ability to deliver emotional resonance and technical skill. Tracks like “GameBoy” hint at the potential for deeper artistic exploration, but they never quite take the risks needed to make the album truly memorable. Ultimately, while there’s an appreciation for the effort and execution behind Rosie, it feels more like an echo of expectations than a bold declaration of ROSÉ’s artistry. The album leaves listeners wondering not only what could have been but also what might still be possible for an artist as talented as ROSÉ.

20. #RIIZE - RIIZING

Vocal Performance: 6.3/10

Album Production: 8/10

Artist/Group Identity: 7/ 10

Overall Rating : 7.1/10

Favorite Song: Honestly Less Favorite: One Kiss

Overall Critique:

RIIZING marks a strategic push into the mainstream music scene. Known for creating global phenomena like #EXO, #NCT, and #Aespa , #SM has always prided itself on a rigorous emphasis on vocal refinement and technical perfection. However, RIIZING appears to signal a shift in priorities. While the album delivers well-produced tracks with strong sonic appeal, it seems to forgo the vocal polish and technical mastery SM artists are traditionally known for. This is a bold, albeit controversial, decision. Critics might find this shift harsh, arguing it waters down SM’s legacy of vocal excellence. Yet, it’s clear this approach was intentional—aimed at crafting an accessible sound that resonates with broader audiences, particularly in Western markets. Despite these critiques,#RIIZING fares well in its overall execution. The tracks are cohesive, driven by infectious beats, and brimming with the youthful energy RIIZE embodies. The group’s strength lies in their charisma and ability to connect with listeners through their raw, unpolished delivery. Songs “Honestly” showcase the group’s potential to thrive in the highly competitive K-pop industry while paving their own path. RIIZING is a noteworthy debut that highlights SM Entertainment’s adaptability and willingness to evolve. It’s a strategic move to capture a new generation of fans while challenging long-time listeners to embrace a different side of the company’s artistry. Though polarizing, it’s a step that may help RIIZE achieve lasting success on the global stage.

19. THE BOYZ – Trigger

Vocal Performance: 7.8 /10

Album Production: 7.5 /10

Artist/Group Identity: 6.8/ 10

Overall Rating : 7.3 /10

Favorite Song: Slip Away Less Favorite: They See Me Dream

Overall Critique:

#THEBOYZ have had consistency issues proving their ability to evolve as artists, and their latest album, Trigger, was a pleasant surprise. The group’s growth is apparent the way they tackle a variety of genres. However, while Trigger showcases their undeniable talent, it find a sometimes feels like the group is leaning on familiar formulas. Several tracks come across as a borderline generic take on the styles popularized by other groups, making it difficult for the album to carve out its own distinct identity. That said, there are some shining moments on Trigger. For me, the standout track is “Slip Away.” It’s solid composition and execution, effortlessly blending sultry undertones with an air of sophistication. THE BOYZ thrive in this realm of seductive maturity, a style that feels uniquely suited to them and sets them apart when fully embraced. The layered vocals, smooth transitions, and restrained intensity in “Slip Away” highlight the group’s potential to break out of the mold and create something truly memorable. Trigger is an album that reflects THE BOYZ’s journey as artists, and while there’s room for more innovation, it’s clear that their growth is laying the groundwork for a promising future. Fans and casual listeners alike will find moments to appreciate, even if the album as a whole doesn’t always hit the mark of originality.

18. #RM ~ Right People, Wrong Place

Vocal Performance: 7 /10

Album Production: 8/10

Artist/Group Identity: 7.5/ 10

Overall Rating : 7.5 /10

Favorite Song: Less Favorite:

Overall Critique:

RM’s Right People, Wrong Place is an ambitious exploration into niche music that showcases his growth as an artist and his willingness to push boundaries. The album demonstrates a level of maturity in his artistry, with an emphasis on introspection, vulnerability, and genre experimentation. However, it also comes with its share of shortcomings, particularly when viewed through the lens of its marketing and its connection to the larger BTS phenomenon. One of the album’s strengths lies in #RM willingly stepping away from the mainstream and explore more personal and experimental themes. The production is sophisticated, and his lyrical depth, often delving into complex emotions and existential questions, is commendable. Fans who value artistry over mass appeal will find much to appreciate here. RM’s dedication to expanding his musical horizons is admirable, and he continues to solidify his place as one of K-pop’s more thoughtful lyricists.

However, Right People, Wrong Place often feels burdened by the weight of expectation that comes with RM’s status as a #BTS member. The album leans heavily on the existing BTS fandom to generate interest rather than letting the music speak for itself. This creates a sense of disconnect—one can’t help but wonder how the album would fare if it were released without the BTS brand attached. The lack of authentic promotion that highlights the album’s quality rather than relying on fan-driven hype diminishes the impact of what could have been a landmark release. Additionally, RM’s venture into niche music feels like a double-edged sword. While it is praiseworthy that he is catering to a specific audience and staying true to his artistic vision, the album makes little effort to draw in new listeners. The music’s insular nature, coupled with the belief pushed by some fans that RM is “the best rapper in K-pop,” works against the project. Instead of broadening his appeal, the album feels overly tailored to an already devoted segment of listeners. Right People, Wrong Place is a commendable effort that highlights RM’s artistry and growth, but it falls short of its potential to transcend fandom boundaries. The album feels weighed down by pretensions and over-reliance on an existing fan base, which detracts from its ability to stand on its own merits. While it is undoubtedly a significant step in RM’s career, it leaves room for improvement in balancing artistic authenticity with broader accessibility.

17. #Red Velvet ~ COSMIC

Vocal Performance: 8.5/10

Album Production:8/10

Artist/Group Identity: 7/ 10

Overall Rating : 7.1 /10

Favorite Song: Last Drop Less Favorite: Bubble

Red Velvet’s Cosmic is yet another testament to their mastery in delivering refined, quality music. The album showcases their signature vocal prowess and consistent musical sophistication, a hallmark that has set them apart in the K-pop landscape. As always, their voices are velvety smooth and intricately layered, creating an auditory experience that feels rich and polished. However, while the execution is undeniably impressive, Cosmic lacks the edge and innovation one might expect from a senior group with their stature. Groups like #Aespa have pushed boundaries in sonic experimentation, but #RedVelvet strength lies in their consistency—a characteristic I admire and often gravitate toward when choosing between #SM girl groups. That said, I can’t help but feel this album misses a pivotal moment—something bold and definitive—that reasserts Red Velvet’s relevance as the gold standard for vocal performance among female K-pop groups today. Cosmic is a beautiful addition to their discography, but it stops just short of being the groundbreaking statement it could have been.

16. #nMixx - FE304: BREAK

Vocal Performance: 7.8 /10

Album Production:8/10

Artist/Group Identity: 7.3/ 10

Overall Rating : 7.7 /10

Favorite Song: XOXO Less Favorite: Sonar (Breaker)

Over Critique:

FE304 Break offers a collection of tracks that are polished, vibrant, and undeniably showcase the immense talent of the group. The girls’ performances throughout the album are high-quality, with impeccable vocal delivery and a clear command of their individual skills. One of the standout aspects of the album is how well they execute vocal harmonies and dueling melodies, creating dynamic and layered moments that highlight their synergy as a group. Their ability to balance complex arrangements with precision is impressive and adds a touch of sophistication to the listening experience. However, despite this technical brilliance, the album feels like it’s missing a certain spark that makes the group truly stand out. While enjoyable, it doesn’t offer much that leaves a lasting impression or inspires a deeper dive into their identity as a group. The songs, though solid, feel more like a showcase of talent than a cohesive artistic statement that sets them apart from their peers. In conclusion, FE304 Break is an enjoyable listen, particularly for those who appreciate strong vocals, harmonies, and well-executed melodies. But as a body of work, it doesn’t quite deliver the unique appeal or connection that might transform casual listeners into dedicated fans.

15.
KISS OF LIFE - Lose Yourself

Vocal Performance: 7.8/10

Album Production:7.8/10

Artist/Group Identity: 8/ 10

Overall Rating :7.8/10

Favorite Song: No One But US Less Favorite: Get Loud

Overall Critique:

KISS OF LIFE’s Lose Yourself is such a fun album to listen to, and it really shows how much raw talent these girls have. Their voices are incredible—each member brings something unique to the table, and their vocal ability is undeniable. You can hear their potential shining through on every track. That said, there are moments in the album where the vocals don’t always mesh as well as they could. On tracks like “Get Loud” and “Too Many Alex,” the energy is great, but it feels like their individual voices are competing rather than blending. It’s not a dealbreaker, but I feel like with some tighter vocal arrangement or more practice as a unit, they could elevate those moments and make them even stronger. Then there are songs like “Igloo,” which let their voices shine without too much production, and it’s in these stripped-down moments that their pure talent really stands out.

They don’t need a lot of bells and whistles—their vocals can absolutely carry a song on their own. Overall, Lose Yourself is a great showcase of what KISS OF LIFE is capable of, and it’s exciting to see their growth. They’ve got all the raw ingredients—now it’s just about refining how they work together as a group. I’m definitely rooting for them, and I can’t wait to see how they level up in the future. #kissoflife交換 #topkpopalbums2024 #yazarati

14. Katseye - SIS

Vocal Performance: 9/10

Album Production:8/10

Artist/Group Identity: 7/ 10

Overall Rating : 8/10

Favorite Song: I’m Pretty Least Favorite: Debut

Overall Critique:

SIS is an exercise in perfection, but perfection that feels hollow. The album is undeniably well-produced, with its sonic quality boasting a polish that matches the highest industry standards. Each track is performed with precision, highlighting the technical skill of the group. However, what SIS lacks is the character and individuality that could truly make it stand out.

While not a traditional K-pop group, # Katseye SIS firmly qualifies as a K-pop-adjacent album, borrowing heavily from the genre’s playbook. The meticulous production, and genre-blending elements that define K-pop are all present here. However, the album doesn’t fully embrace the distinctiveness that often makes K-pop compelling. Instead, it feels more like an imitation of the genre’s surface rather than a celebration of its deeper storytelling and cultural integration.

Katseye is a girl group known not only for their talent but for their diverse, multilingual backgrounds. Yet, this unique element is disappointingly absent in SIS. Rather than celebrating their members’ cultural richness and allowing their diverse identities to inform the music, the album settles for a generic, albeit flawless, sound. This feels like a missed opportunity to create something distinctive and memorable, especially in a genre like K-pop, which often thrives on innovation and individuality.

While the album demonstrates that each member is vocally gifted and capable of executing complex harmonies, it doesn’t convey the depth of their individual artistry. Instead of showcasing their unique talents and personalities, the music prioritizes trendiness and commercial appeal, leaving listeners with little sense of who Katseye truly is as a group.

That said, SIS is undeniably a sonic success. The production is crisp, and the performances are impeccable. Fans of meticulously crafted pop—and K-pop enthusiasts looking for polished execution—will find much to enjoy here. Still, those seeking a more intimate or innovative expression of #KATSEYE potential might walk away

13. Xikers - Watch Out

Vocal Performance: 8/10

Album Production: 9.3/10

Artist/Group Identity: 7/ 10

Overall Rating : 8.1/10

Favorite Song: SANDCASTLE

Least Favorite: Hang Around

Overall critique:

Xikers’ debut album, Watch Out, is a bold and experimental entry into the K-pop scene. The album’s standout feature is its bold and innovative musical composition. Xikers take inspiration from their predecessors, At

Stray Kids, known for their intense rhythms and ATEEZ , known for their complex musical structures. However, Xikers doesn’t merely mimic these groups; instead, they forge a unique path by fusing these influences into something distinctly their own. The result is a vibrant mix of heavy beats, layered vocals, and intricate instrumental arrangements that push the boundaries of conventional K-pop.

Tracks like “SANDCASTLE” highlight their talent for rhythm-heavy production, featuring dynamic transitions and layered compositions. Despite the experimental nature of the album, Xikers maintain a cohesive and fresh sound throughout, revealing new layers with each listen.

They confidently push the boundaries of K-pop, making it exciting to see where they’ll go next.
